My Favorite Podcasts

It's no secret, podcasts are the new thing.

The last year or so, I have really gotten into listening to podcasts. I drive almost an hour to school Monday-Thursday, so music gets old pretty quick. I have gone through so many different categories of podcasts and thought I would share my favorites with you.

Thriller/True Crime

Up and Vanished- This was the first podcast I ever listened to. A friend actually recommended it to me because I was headed for a long road trip to get on a cruise. Tyler and I absolutely loved it. Season 1 tells the story of a beauty queen/teacher who was killed in a small town in Georgia. Payne Lindsey does a great job narrating it. It is 24 episodes, so it will take some time to get through it, but wow is the ending shocking. Season 2 is about a girl who vanished from a remote town in Colorado. Her body was never found. This season was much different from the first, but still intriguing for sure. I listened to Season 1 after it had aired so I was able to binge but Season 2 I listened in real time. Both seasons are wonderful and I definitely recommend.

Serial- This podcast has 3 seasons. I have only listened to the first! It is about a girl, Hae Min Lee who disappears after school one day. Her ex-boyfriend was arrested and convicted of her murder. He remains in prison but still swears of his innocence. The reporter investigates each aspect of the case and has many conversations with Adnan Syed, the ex-boyfriend in prison. I really enjoyed this one because it was a constant conversation of his innocence or guilt. There are updates from time to time that I really like catching up on.

Happy Face- A look back on a serial killer, known as the Happy Face killer. It shares lots of insight of his family. Melissa Moore, his daughter, talks about her childhood and growing up with a serial killer for a dad. Melissa's mother also talked about life with Keith and all the signs she missed. While this podcast was not as suspenseful as the last two, it had such a fascinating perspective that the others didn't.

Dr. Death- This was quite the story, one that I was surprised I hadn't heard of until listening to it. It tells the story of Christopher Duntsch, a Texas surgeon, who left thirty-one patients seriously injured after operating on them. Two of his patients died during his operation. Listening to this podcast left my jaw dropped most of the time or yelling "no" in the car. It was truly horrifying and incredibly interesting. Listen to this to hear how it all ends.

Dirty John- I listened to this after listening to Dr. Death. It tells the story of Debra Newell who meets John on a dating site. She falls in love quick but her children do not like him and try and explain his elaborate impossible stories. It is a story that just continues to escalate. I don't want to give too much away, so just listen to hear what happens. I promise you won't be disappointed. Dirty John became a short series on Bravo as well. I haven't watched yet, but have heard the podcast is far more detailed. So, listen first and then go watch!

Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez-I didn't know what category to put this one under, but it seemed to work well here. Football Star Aaron Hernandez went from a NFL player to a convicted murderer in just a few years. It tells the story of Aaron's life and crimes and discusses the possibilities for the behavior. For instance, it discusses brain damage in NFL players. This was such an interesting listen. I do not care for football and still loved listening to this one.

Educational

Ted Radio Hour-This was also a hard one to put into a category. I feel like I learn something every time I listen, so I put under educational. I am sure everyone has heard of TED Talks. This is just a radio version. They take talks and adapt them for the radio. I have listened to a couple that I found pretty boring, but also a few I really enjoyed. I really enjoyed "Dying Well". Death is often a subject we don't discuss. It explores death and also talks about the beauty of life. Also, wow there is one Ted Talk that left me in tears, actual tears. The most Another episode I listened to was "The Person You Become". It talked about how over the course of our life we redefine who we are. We have different experiences that shape us and this episode unpacks and discusses that. "How we Love" was also interested. A discussion on what it is that bring certain people together and the mystery of connections and relationships.

Self-Help

RISE- If you follow me on Instagram or have read my last blog, you know I love Rachel Hollis. She is so funny, empowering, and leaves me with ways to work on becoming my best self. This is mostly a podcast for business women or entrepreneurs, but I listen to several of her podcasts. She typically has special guests on and they discuss different aspects of being a successful business owner. However, I have listened to quite a few episodes that anyone would enjoy. She always has great insight on tangible ways you can improve your life. Definitely recommend if you are a business owner or an aspiring one. If not, you can definitely find episodes that are for you, just not all.

RISE Together- Wow, I love this one. As you can see from the name, it is another Rachel Hollis podcast. However, it is a relationship podcast that she does with her husband. They are honest, fun to listen to, and always leave me with ideas to improve my relationships or new topics to discuss with Tyler. There has not been an episode I listened to and didn't like. If you are married, engaged, or even dating, you will enjoy this podcast.

Miscellaneous

Beautiful Anonymous- This is a podcast I just stumbled upon and ended up enjoying. It is hosted by a comedian, Chris Gethard, but is far from a comedy podcast. Each episode includes a unique story told by a caller. They can talk about anything and everything. Only two rules, they have to stay anonymous and Chris cannot hang up on the caller during the hour. I have heard so many stories that are captivating, interesting, and heartbreaking. It can include religion, politics, relationships, love, tragedy, experiences, careers, anything and everything. A couple of the one's I have really enjoyed have been "I Survived A Mass Shooting", "Vanity and Sanity", and "Nap Time". I love hearing people's stories and the things that shaped them. This one won't be for everyone, but if you enjoy hearing stories of people you will love this one.

The Ben and Ashley I Almost Famous Podcast- I will just say, if you don't watch The Bachelor, skip on. You will not enjoy this one. I, however, love the Bachelor and Ben Higgins so I really enjoy this one. It discusses The Bachelor episode each week and also has lots of Bachelor nation people on as guests. It covers Bachelor, Bachelorette, Bachelor in Paradise, and keeps you up to date on the drama of all of Bachelor nation.

I have really been enjoying listening to all of these podcasts. Do you listen to podcasts? If so, send your recommendations! I would love to listen and update this post with new ones as I listen. Comment on this post or message me on Instagram @tia_mccutchen.

Happy podcast listening!
